Boca Raton’s Quantum Chapter and Your Next Florida Base

Last updated: 29 October 2026

Boca Raton brings together a planned quantum-computing headquarters, a $20 million university hardware agreement and a 124-acre office campus under new ownership. These commitments are progressing on different timetables. For an international founder or executive, they justify investigating local business relationships and testing how a Boca base would fit the household’s working and school week.

D-Wave’s planned headquarters, Florida Atlantic University’s research investment and new ownership of BRiC give Boca Raton a more specific place in the South Florida business conversation. Their relevance begins with your work here.

Three commitments moving at different speeds

On 27 January 2026, D-Wave selected Boca Raton Innovation Campus, known as BRiC, for its new corporate headquarters and a key U.S. research and development facility. Its announced plan was to move from Palo Alto by the end of 2026, with core research, testing and support for its annealing quantum systems in Boca. At this article’s fact-check date, the company’s contact page still described its Boca headquarters and research facility as “COMING SOON.” D-Wave announcement · Current locations

That same day, Florida Atlantic University signed a $20 million agreement to purchase and install an Advantage2 annealing quantum computer on its Boca Raton campus. Deployment was expected later in 2026; the sources reviewed do not establish an operational installation. The $20 million is FAU’s commitment under that agreement, separate from the headquarters relocation. Purchase announcement

On 11 September, Related Ross announced its completed acquisition of BRiC at 5000 T-Rex Avenue. The property covers 124 acres and more than 1.7 million square feet of existing space. Related Ross said it would continue operating the office and technology campus while developing its longer-term plans. Prospective occupiers should examine currently available premises and services alongside future improvements. Acquisition announcement

The university is building an organisation around the hardware

FAU’s progress includes identifiable leadership and an executive-education initiative. Robert Loredo became executive director of its Center for Quantum Technologies on 1 July, an appointment announced on 9 July. His remit includes research, software and workforce education. His centre provides a defined starting point for business enquiries. FAU leadership announcement

On 5 August, FAU also announced an eight-week certificate, Quantum Computing: Business and Sourcing Strategy, aimed at business and technology decision-makers without requiring a quantum-science background. Its subjects include evaluating providers and planning adoption. Confirm the next available cohort directly with FAU. The course announcement is evidence of educational development; access to the planned onsite machine requires its own confirmation. FAU certificate announcement

Begin with a business problem you can define

The word “quantum” covers different technologies. Advantage2 uses quantum annealing, which D-Wave presents as a tool for complex optimisation. The company distinguishes this from its gate-model work, designed to address different problem types. It also offers cloud access. Your business therefore needs to establish both the technical fit and the reason a local presence would help. D-Wave’s technology overview

If your company manages fleets, production schedules or constrained resources, arrive with a specific problem: which decisions take too long, what data describe them, and what improvement would be commercially meaningful? FAU has identified logistics, supply chains and transportation among intended workshop and application areas. Those interests create subjects for a conversation, without establishing that a programme is accepting your project. FAU’s January announcement

Ask potential counterparts who can sponsor a project, what access is available, how results would be compared with your current methods, and who controls data and intellectual property. A signed research arrangement, a recruitment conversation and an executive course serve different purposes. Define which one would justify putting people in Boca before choosing office space.

Decide what evidence would change your plan

You can explore Boca while keeping commitments proportionate to what you know. Arrange institutional discussions alongside residence and school visits. Before committing to a permanent base, identify which unresolved assumption would change the choice: an onsite work requirement, confirmed research access or a school decision.

The next useful milestones are an operating headquarters, confirmation of FAU’s installation and published routes for participation. BRiC’s ownership change supplies another reason to follow the campus, while proposed amenities should enter your plan as they become available. Your home should still suit you if the quantum programme develops more slowly than expected.

A quick reference

Three questions, answered.

Has D-Wave completed its move to Boca Raton?

Its January announcement targeted the end of 2026. At the fact-check date, D-Wave’s contact page still labelled its Boca headquarters and research facility “COMING SOON.”

Is FAU’s $20 million quantum computer available to outside businesses?

The purchase agreement alone establishes neither an operational installation nor access for a particular business. Ask FAU about commissioning, participation and project terms.

Does the BRiC acquisition strengthen the case for buying a nearby home?

It makes the campus worth following. Your purchase decision still needs to work for the home’s condition, costs, location and household use without assuming a technology-driven price premium.
