Moving from Argentina to Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach: E-2 treaty status, a March school year, no tax treaty, Buenos Aires flights and the Landing Plan.

By Le Strand · Published

Argentine families start with one visa advantage. Argentina's treaty with the United States dates from 1854, and it gives Argentine nationals access to the E-1 and E-2 categories. Three other facts shape the move, though. There is no U.S.–Argentina income tax treaty. The Argentine school year begins around February or March, depending on jurisdiction and level. And moving money has historically required careful timing. This guide covers each of those, then the neighbourhoods and flights across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Le Strand coordinates them into one written Le Strand Landing Plan.

Which U.S. visa routes do Argentine families consider?

Argentine families can discuss E-2, L-1, EB-5, O-1 and the employment-based green cards. The State Department lists Argentina as an E-1 and E-2 treaty country, with the treaty in force since 20 December 1854.

  • E-2 treaty investor. This fits owners who invest a substantial amount in a U.S. business they will develop and direct. The State Department's treaty rules mean nationality decides eligibility. For the principal applicant, residence in Argentina does not establish treaty nationality. Counsel separately checks the spouse's and children's eligibility as dependants. See E-2 intelligence.
  • L-1 intracompany transfer. This suits Argentine groups opening or expanding a U.S. office. See L-1 intelligence and business expansion with a family move.
  • EB-5 investor green card. For petitions filed on or after 15 March 2022, the USCIS Policy Manual sets the minimum at $1,050,000, or $800,000 in a targeted employment area or infrastructure project. The amounts are scheduled to adjust on 1 January 2027. See EB-5 intelligence.
  • O-1 and EB-1. These routes serve founders, scientists, artists and athletes with sustained recognition. See O-1 and EB-1.
  • Italian or Spanish nationality. Some family members may hold Italian or Spanish citizenship. Both countries are in the Visa Waiver Program, which can simplify visits. Both are also E-2 treaty countries.

Argentina is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so Argentine-only passport holders need a B-1/B-2 visa for visits. Independent immigration counsel advises on the route. Le Strand sequences the move around their answer. See the U.S. immigration pathways overview.

What tax questions does the absence of a treaty raise?

The United States has no income tax treaty with Argentina. Argentina does not appear on the IRS list of U.S. income tax treaty partners. No U.S.–Argentina Social Security agreement appears on the SSA list either. Income, gains and pension contributions therefore fall under each country's domestic rules, without treaty relief.

Questions to take to your advisers: When do we stop being Argentine tax residents, and what does ARCA, which replaced AFIP require on departure? How will income from Argentine companies, farmland and rental property be taxed once we are U.S. residents? What is the U.S. treatment of our Argentine bienes personales holdings and investment structures? What are the current Argentine foreign-exchange rules for transferring funds abroad, and how do they affect the sequence of our home purchase? When do we meet the IRS substantial presence test? Which U.S. reporting applies to our Argentine and third-country accounts, including the FBAR and Form 8938?

Le Strand writes these questions into the Landing Plan with owners and dates. Your Argentine contador and your U.S. tax adviser provide the answers.

How do the school calendars line up?

They do not line up neatly. Argentina's school year runs from about March to December. The national 2026 calendar lists Buenos Aires Province from 2 March to 22 December and the City of Buenos Aires from 25 February to 18 December. Confirm the dates for the child's school and level. Florida runs from August to late May or early June.

For 2026–27, Broward County Public Schools and the School District of Palm Beach County began on 10 August 2026, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools on 13 August 2026. Families usually choose one of two options:

  1. Leave in July. The child steps out of the Argentine year after the winter break and starts a full Florida year in August.
  2. Leave in December. The child finishes the Argentine year and joins a Florida class in January, which needs a placement conversation with the receiving school.

Florida law makes a child eligible for public kindergarten if they turn five on or before 1 September. Older children are placed based on records, so bring translated libretas and the vaccination record. Bring vaccination records for a Florida health professional to complete the school-entry documentation, normally Form DH 680, or the applicable exemption documentation. Le Strand coordinates school timing with the home search. Schools decide admissions. See Schools & family and the South Florida education corridor.

For a later intake, confirm the receiving school's published calendar, application deadline and available places. Private-school dates vary. Le Strand places those confirmed dates alongside the home and adviser timetable.

Choosing an area in South Florida

Le Strand helps each family compare areas against its own priorities: the daily commute, the school journey, the setting it wants and the type of property. Every shortlist covers Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, and each option is compared at the address level, with the journeys that shape the family's ordinary week.

See the Miami landing overview, the Fort Lauderdale landing overview and the Palm Beach landing overview.

A cross-border purchase needs the funding timetable to align with Florida's title, insurance and closing process. Florida transactions add title insurance, property tax, insurance cover and closing procedures. The Landing Plan sets these out in sequence, so the purchase timetable reflects how a Florida closing actually runs.

Which flights connect South Florida and Argentina?

Miami's October schedule lists Buenos Aires–Ezeiza nonstops with American Airlines, Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM. Compare the complete itinerary when starting in Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza or elsewhere in Argentina. Buenos Aires is one hour ahead of Florida during U.S. daylight saving time and two hours ahead in the northern winter.

Route examples checked 19 October 2026. Confirm operating dates, seasonal service and connections with the airline before booking. Compare total journey time, including the transfer to your South Florida destination.

What practical steps are specific to Argentine families?

Four practical items to plan for Argentine families: the driver's licence, credit history, consular services and household set-up.

  • Driver's licence. Florida requires new residents to get a Florida licence within 30 days of establishing residency. Argentina is not on Florida's list of jurisdictions with a test waiver, so Argentine licence holders take the knowledge and driving tests. Since 6 February 2026, these exams are given in English only.
  • Credit history. Ask the receiving bank, lender or landlord which U.S. credit records and alternative financial evidence it accepts. Bring your existing records into that conversation before committing to a lease or vehicle finance. Le Strand coordinates the document timetable with the institutions you choose.
  • Consular services. The Consulate General of Argentina in Miami handles passports and civil registration for Argentines in Florida.
  • Household set-up. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. It affects insurance, closing timing and the choice of property.

How does Le Strand coordinate an Argentina-to-South Florida move?

Le Strand begins with a Landing Assessment. It covers the household, the E-2 or other route under discussion, the tax and foreign-exchange questions, the school-year choice and the role of the Florida home. The Le Strand Landing Plan then sets out every step in writing, with dependencies, dates and owners.

Le Strand introduces you to independent immigration counsel and U.S. tax professionals experienced with Argentine families where you need them. It coordinates their requirements with your Argentine advisers, the school timetable and the home search. For the regional picture, see Latin America to Florida, and see the Landing Plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Argentina an E-2 visa country?

Yes. The State Department lists Argentina for E-1 and E-2 under a treaty in force since 20 December 1854. Eligibility follows nationality, so independent immigration counsel confirms it for each family member.

Do Argentines need a visa to visit Florida?

Argentine-only passport holders need a B-1/B-2 visa, because Argentina is not in the Visa Waiver Program. Family members with an Italian or Spanish passport may be able to use ESTA instead.

Is there a U.S.–Argentina tax treaty?

No. Argentina does not appear on the IRS list of U.S. income tax treaties, and no Social Security agreement is in force. Take cross-border tax questions to your advisers early.

When should Argentine children move to Florida schools?

Many families move in July for the August start. Broward and Palm Beach public schools began on 10 August 2026 and Miami-Dade on 13 August 2026. A December move means joining mid-year.

Are there direct flights from Buenos Aires to South Florida?

MIA's October 2026 schedule lists Buenos Aires–Ezeiza nonstops with American Airlines, Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM. Confirm the operating dates with the airline.

Can I exchange my Argentine driver's licence in Florida?

No. Argentine licence holders who become Florida residents take the knowledge and driving tests, in English.

Does my Argentine credit history count in the United States?

Ask the landlord or lender which credit records and supporting financial documents it will accept. The Le Strand Landing Plan puts that document check ahead of the lease or finance application.
